    by VECA, February, 02 2016

Have you ever been undecided about which colors to choose for indoor pots to be able to give a touch of authenticity to your home? Rest assured, there is no need to exaggerate: it also takes only two have been thought just for the style of the environment, that your home will acquire originality in a heartbeat! With two colors, it will be possible to get countless variations. How? There are two alternatives. Indoor vases color: how to choose?

The blogger Marinella Rauso we recommend a neutral color, white or black, depending on the shade of the house, and a colorful, matching or contrasting. White is the most versatile and, as in fashion, lends itself to different possibilities. An interesting idea is to make a mix & match with many colorful flowers or flowers tone on tone, very effective solution on an internal total white, for example.

Finally, a vase of flowers can always give that little extra to a room, for example: in the bathroom next to the sink will give an exotic and relaxing touch, in the living room next to a chair will encourage a meditative environment and recollection, while the kitchen will the constant companionship of scents and colors typical of a small garden.

Action in preparation for the spring: cleaning, pruning, sowing

    by VECA, February, 02 2016

The spring is now approaching and February is the month of transition par excellence, where the winter is almost over and our craving for more warm, sunny days is getting stronger. Although it may seem strange to many of you, this is the time of year when you need to start the preparation of your garden in anticipation of the arrival of summer. What are the things to do? We have summarized them in three fundamental action: cleaning, pruning and planting.

So arm yourself with gloves, shears and rake, because before you begin any new activity on your garden, you need to make a deep restyling! The winter, you know, with rains, storms, ice and snow, causing the accumulation on the leaf mold and dead branches in the long run they rot. Therefore you should remove all this vegetation that was deposited over time, so as to return to breathe the ground and leave room for new seedlings. If you have clay vessels that are stained due to constant exposure to winter weather, a trick to clean them is to soak them in a basin of cold water containing vinegar or lemon juice and rub until the stains will not be disappeared … et voila, your vessels will be like new!

After cleaning thoroughly your garden, you have to pass to the most important action: pruning! It is precisely in this period, in fact, that twigs and branches need to be cut to enable them subsequently to grow and sprout optimally. Some rules to follow to do a good job are:

    • First, to have perfectly sharpened shears, because the cut should be clean;
    • if you do not know what to prune, you prefer a light cutting rather than one heavy
    • cut in a lighter way the strong branches and in a heavier way smaller branches: if you will do the opposite, the plant will become weak and will likely not bloom
    • do not cut the branch too far from the bud, otherwise the wood left over may dry
    • evergreen plants are pruned in the spring when they are no longer possible frosts: prune in the fall would mean condemning the new branches, because of cold temperatures at birth

Finally, we proceed with the planting. There are very many plants that can be planted in this month, for example, Carnation, Dahlia, Primula or Calendula. Sowing on the pot, you need to prepare a moist soil composed stored inside in which you are going to place the seeds; conclude with the watering.

HOW AND WHAT TO PLANT IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY ON YOUR BALCONY

    by VECA, January, 01 2016

Article written by Simonetta Chiarugi di aboutgarden.it for VECA

Impatient gardeners who decide to start seeding defying the inevitable January and February frost, may proceed to the task directly inside pots placed on the balcony of their homes, so that in April and May, the seedlings will already be well formed and with sufficiently strong roots to face being transplanted in the ground if you have a garden, in a larger container, or you can simply thin them out to continue growing them in the same pot.

Among the things you can grow in pots on balconies are flowers but also fruits such as strawberries, that easily adapt to small spaces and requires minimal care in exchange for an abundant production from May until October, as long as you plant reflourishing species such as Fragaria vesca ‘Reine des Vallées’, with an elongated shape, and Fragaria vesca ‘Baron Solemacher’, a rounder variety.

Choose a container that is not too small, so that roots can develop properly, 60 cm long is usually the most appropriate size, obviously built in plastic, lightweight and non perishable. I replaced my old terracotta pots to complement my windows overlooking the alley with Roxanne by VECA, a pot with saucer that retains excess water and is convenient especially with a lot of pedestrians walking by under your balconies.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR PLANTS IN JANUARY

    by VECA, January, 01 2016
The plants and flowers in the garden of January

Despite the cold, January is the perfect time for some winter plants and some species projected to the spring bloom, particularly bulbous plants. Here are the flowers to plant in these days!

Cyclamen: is one of the most famous and popular winter plants, resists the cold and grows in pots, so you can have balconies cheerful even in winter.

Tulip: to plant the tulip bulbs you can wait until the end of the month, unless you live in a place where winter is especially warm. Remember to not bury the bulbs too deep (it only takes 5-10 cm) and add a lot of water for the first few days.

Primrose: despite their name evokes spring, primroses are hardy and can be planted even in winter. If you want to keep a pot of primrose in your home, remember to place it away from radiators and heat sources.

Tips and tricks for the plants in January

January is the month most insidious for our plants!

Most of plants we found in our apartments are of tropical origin, lovers of high temperatures and humidity. Poor lighting, space heating and the possibility of cold drafts put a strain on the plants which, however, would like to live in a bright, warm and very humid enviroment.

Among the essential actions to be carried out it is definitely important to establish the right level of humidity in the room. In addition to relying humidifiers , we can spray with the special convenient accessories.

Another important issue to consider is the cleanliness of the vessels that host our plants. In this period many pots and boxes are now empty, it is therefore the best time to clean them adequately (just water with a few drops of bleach), in such a way as to make them ready for use.

After cleaning the vessels do not forget the saucers, the most common cause of root rot.
