    AROMATIC PLANTS IN WINTER

    by VECA, November, 11 2015

HOW TO GROW AROMATIC PLANTS IN POT, TO BRING THE FRAGRANCE OF SUMMER IN THE HEART OF WINTER

Written by Chiara Palombo of giardinote.com for VECA.

The end of November is near, and with it the first frosts. The garden will start to winter rest. But that does not mean having to give up the scents of fresh aromatic, indispensable in the kitchen and to cheer the home windows. Rosemary, sage and thyme: among the herbs, they are some of the most resistant to cold, which support the winter months.

Rosemary – Rosmarinus officinalis: in almost all the orchards and gardens of our country, it may have upright or falling form; the latter form is very suitable for covering sunny walls or to be used in terrace gardens, where it will quickly become a thick fragrant carpet, with blue flowers in May and June. In upright form it can be easily pruned to straight or rounded hedge.

Sage – Salvia officinalis: as well as useful in the kitchen for its unmistakable aroma, sage is also a plant of great ornamental value; with its beautiful oval leaves, silver gray, illuminates the garden and shrubs of sage are a perfect companion to highlight the white or blue flowers. There are also colorful leaf varieties, all equally aromatic and fragrant. To thicken the bush and always have new leaves, just remove the flowers.

Thyme – Thymus: very rustic, very good in the kitchen for any dish of chicken or fish due to its slightly citrus flavor. It ‘a compact plant, a small evergreen bush, which is easily self-seeding.

To ensure the wellbeing of these plants, just a few simple precautions.First of all, the choice of the vessel: for window sills and balconies, choose it lightweight and easily transportable to the shelter, in the event of planned intense frosts. Choose it in tune with the color of your window frames, or deliberately contrasted: for my window in walnut, I chose a trio of Veca bronze vases, with a frost effect, slightly pearlescent surface. Available in many sizes, they adapt very well to the depth of the sill.

The greatest risk for these herbs, in winter, is water stagnation, which with night frost can turn into ice and burn the roots. To avoid this, expose vessels to the south or west, so that they are exposed to the sun for at least 4-5 hours and wet a little, preferably in the morning, so that the soil has time to disperse the excess moisture during the day.

You have to watering once every ten days, if there isn’t dry wind; even less frequently, if you live in a humid climate. For extra protection, you can create an insulating layer by placing the plant in a pot with a diameter of 2-3 cm smaller than the one chosen, and fill the space between the two pots with soil, preferably mixed with sand.

Well protected, your favorite herbs can live on a window sill or on a balcony next to the kitchen, ready to give fresh herbs to your dishes all winter!

    by VECA, November, 11 2015

The cold weather arrived and our balcony risk of being sad and bare! It is true that autumn is the season when the leaves fall, but with the right precautions you can take a bit of fun without renouncing to a touch of color!

Simply choose plants that do not fear the cold to have flowers even in December! In winter the balcony is decorated with violets, gaultheria, cyclamens and other evergreens ready to frame and protect the blooms.

    • Violets do not fear snow and rain. They offer a wide range of flowers throughout the winter period and, after the frost, resume flowering until late May.
    • Cyclamen are inevitable! Just as with violets, you can find different varieties with a considerable assortment of colors. They are perfect to adorn your balcony with a touch of pink.
    • If you are looking of flowers that give a touch of yellow and white, go for the chrysanthemums: their colorful flowers bloom between late October and early November.

Take finally a touch of green growing ivy: when you look out the window you seem to be still in the middle of summer!

To complete the work, choose colorful pots, which perfectly match the colors of the flowers. Elegant and minimalist this ton-sur-ton of purple, but you can play with contrasts and enhancing white chrysanthemums with fuchsia or green vessels!

The modern square vase Cosmos is not only finely decorated, but also technologically advanced and extremely durable – its greatest strength –

    TERRACE IN AUTUMN

    by VECA, October, 10 2015
Written by Marinella Rauso of www.ilovegreeninspiration.com for VECA.

We say terrace in autumn and immediately we think about the colors of the foliage, cane sugar and cinnamon. Warm colors ranging from yellow to cognac, passing by the Burgundians and the red brick. They are the colors of the leaves that line, like a carpet, the streets in this time of year.

Autumn means fresh air and light that, from intense and brilliant, becomes weak and golden. Despite all this can make you think of something romantic and nostalgic, we must remember that the autumn is the other side of the Spring and that a terrace in Autumn has a special charm.

"Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower."
    Albert Camus

Autumn is not just about leaves and branches to decorate with white lights. There are many elements with which you can decorate the terrace of Autumn to make it more welcoming. White blankets and lanterns are just some of the accessories that will be the backdrop to flowers and plants suitable to this period.

No matter how big is the space you have available, a balcony, a terrace or a winter garden, in each case, you can turn an outsider in an interior, where continue to drink tea and read a book.

Vases and flowers for a terrace in Autumn

One of the most important thing, when you think about how to decorate a terrace, is the choice of vessels. This choice will be decisive on the final appearance of your outdoor room.

Most of the plants needs an abundant amount of soil and should not be transplanted during the year. Choose great vessels, of rectangular shape, for the perennial plants will be the simplest solution, and make easy the transition from summer to winter.

Just thinking about the terrace in Autumn, you can plant n american vine to grow on a bare wall. There are many possibilities, but the simple and minimalistic design of Veca in a neutral color such as light gray, will adapt to almost any situation.

After choosing the permanent elements, combine them with smaller colorful pots to place grouped on a small table. If you choose large bowls, like the Veca living light green, you can easily create mini gardens of succulent plants.

Which plants for a terrace in Autumn?

Autumn is not only green inspiration made of boxwood, olive trees or ivy. There are colorful plants that, as a luxury accessory, will help emphasize some corners.

The heather plant, for example, is similar to a wild bush, such as lavender with pink flowers. You can imagine it in baskets and trunks or in a vase with a rounded shape. They say that in this plant the fairies are hiding and have the power to ward off negativity.

Succulents plants and ornamental cabbages. Play with the shapes and dimensions. Compose them inn pots or trays. They require little maintenance and have a high decorative value.

Cyclamens. They are colorful and very resistant to cold, hanging on a wall in series.
